Through The AFT’s (American Federation of Teachers) Operation Agua, we are bringing water purification systems to Puerto Rican families and communities who are crying out for help—and we’ll continue to respond for as long as it takes. American citizens of Puerto Rico are facing a massive humanitarian crisis. More than a million people still lack running water—they are forced to find water in contaminated streams, collect it from runoff, even drink from toxic Superfund sites. And the danger is not over for those with running water; because water treatment plants are still not operational, tap water may be tainted with raw sewage. But we—YOU—can help alleviate human suffering. Through The AFT’s Operation Agua, we are bringing water purification systems to Puerto Rican families and communities who are crying out for help.

Co-founded by Matt Damon (featured in the video above), Water.org seeks to go beyond drilling wells to ensure that all projects are sustainable for the long-term, involve local partners and community members, adequately address sanitation and hygiene, and have appropriate monitoring systems in place to keep track of issues and successes. They have also developed the WaterCredit initiative, which uses small loans to individuals and communities to empower people to address their own water needs.

For many people that City Harvest serves, local stores don’t stock much healthy food, or when they do it’s too expensive. Through our Healthy Neighborhoods  programs, we work with community partners in low income neighborhoods across New York City to improve access to healthy, affordable food. We do this by providing free fruits and vegetables through our Mobile Markets, and working with local food retailers to increase their ability to stock and sell healthy food. We also teach residents the basics of nutrition and how to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget. In addition to helping meet the immediate need for food, City Harvest takes a long-term approach to hunger relief through these programs which can be found in the South Bronx, Northwest Queens, the North Shore of Staten Island, Bed Stuy in Brooklyn, and Washington Heights/Inwood.

From their humble beginnings in an L.A. apartment on Christmas 2012, the founding friend group of this organization expanded their simple gesture to the formation of a 501(c)(3) called Living Through Giving Foundation. The founders write that their ironic name is a sort of “ode to hashtags” while their rapid growth and success was as welcomed as it was unexpected. The #hashtaglunchbag events are currently hosted in over 100 cities globally where volunteers can help make lunch bags for local distribution. They offer numerous online resources for those who want to get involved and even for those wanting to host their own event.
